Speaker: Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs Chair: Jonathan Leape Recorded on 4 February 2015 in Sheikh Zayed Theatre, New Academic Building. In this public lecture Professor Sachs will talk about his upcoming book, The Age of Sustainable Development, which explains the central concept for our age, which is both a way of understanding the world and a method for solving global problems - sustainable development. Sustainable development tries to make sense of the interactions of three complex systems: the world economy, the global society, and the Earth's physical environment. It recommends a holistic framework, in which society aims for environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive development, underpinned by good governance. It is a way to understand the world, yet is also a normative or ethical view of the world: a way to define the objectives of a well-functioning society, one that delivers wellbeing for its citizens today and in future generations. This book describes key challenges and solutions pathways for every part of the world to be involved in problem solving, brainstorming, and determining new and creative ways to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth. Jeffrey D. Sachs (@jeffdsachs) is a world-renowned professor of economics, leader in sustainable development, senior UN advisor, best selling author, and syndicated columnist whose monthly newspaper columns appear in more than 100 countries. He has twice been named among Time Magazine's 100 most influential world leaders. He was called by the New York Times, "probably the most important economist in the world," and by Time Magazine "the world's best known economist." A recent survey by The Economist Magazine ranked Professor Sachs as among the world's three most influential living economists of the past decade. Professor Sachs serves as the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals, having held the same position under former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He is Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He is co-founder and Chief Strategist of Millennium Promise Alliance, and is director of the Millennium Villages Project. Sachs is also one of the Secretary-General's MDG Advocates, and a Commissioner of the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Development. He has authored three New York Times best sellers in the past seven years: The End of Poverty (2005), Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet (2008), and The Price of Civilization (2011). His most recent book is To Move the World: JFK's Quest for Peace (2013). His upcoming book The Age of Sustainable Development will be published by Columbia University Press on March 10, 2015. Jonathan Leape is the Executive Director of the International Growth Centre (IGC) at LSE. The International Growth Centre (@The_IGC) aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research. Based at LSE and in partnership with Oxford University, the IGC is initiated and funded by DFID.

BACK TO THE FUTURE IN AFGHANISTAN? PROSPECTS FOR U.S.-RUSSIA COOPERATION IN A TIME OF REGIONAL UNCERTAINTY The Trump Administration’s announcement that it would increase the US troop presence in Afghanistan signals a new force-based approach to solving the conflict. In recent years, Russia has actively engaged with the Afghanistan issue, sponsoring regional conferences and peace talks, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov commented that the Trump Administration's new strategy is a “dead end.” How are Washington and Moscow now approaching the promotion of peace and stability in the region and what are their underlying assumptions and constraints? How does each country approach questions of a negotiated political settlement and broader regional diplomacy? Is there a danger of a proxy conflict emerging between the Untied States and Russia in Afghanistan and more broadly across Central Asia? Please join us for a discussion with leading Afghanistan experts from both Russia and the United States. Chairs: Alexander Cooley, Director, Harriman Institute Joshua Tucker, Director, Jordan Center Barnett R. Rubin is a Senior Fellow and Associate Director of the Center on International Cooperation at New York University, where he directs the Afghanistan-Pakistan Regional Program. From 2009-2013 Dr. Rubin was the Senior Adviser to the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan in the U.S. Department of State. In 2001 Rubin served as special advisor to the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, during the negotiations that produced the Bonn Agreement. He subsequently advised the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan on the drafting of the constitution of Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Compact, and the Afghanistan National Development Strategy. Dr. Rubin has written numerous articles, book reviews, and books on Afghanistan, South and Central Asia, U.S. foreign policy, conflict prevention, state formation, and human rights. He is most recently the author of Afghanistan from the Cold War through the War on Terror (Oxford University Press, 2013). Dr. Ekaterina Stepanova heads the Peace and Conflict Studies Unit at the Institute of the World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. From 2007-2009, she directed the Armed Conflicts and Conflict Management Program at the Stockholm International Peace Institute. Dr. Stepanova’s research focuses on armed conflicts, terrorism and insurgencies, the political economy of conflict, and peace-building. She is the author of six books, including Terrorism in Asymmetrical Conflict: Ideological and Structural Aspects (Oxford University Press, 2008). Her latest edited volume is Addressing Terrorism, Violent Extremism and Radicalization: Perspectives from Russia and the United States (IMEMO, 2017). She serves on the editorial boards of Terrorism and Political Violence and Global Governance. She is a Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Professor and lectures at International Programs at Moscow's MGIMO-University, at School of Public Policy of the Russian Academy of National Economy & Public Administration, and at the European University in Saint-Petersburg. Prior to joining Columbia's faculty, Mukhopadhyay spent 2011 as a post-doctoral fellow at Princeton University. Her current work on Afghanistan builds on her first book with a study of palace politics during the Karzai presidency. She also has two projects underway on the Syrian civil war related to Western engagement with the opposition and rebel governance. She is a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations.

A watershed moment in the history of international relations was the outbreak of the First World War, whose centenary is being commemorated in various ways across the Old Continent and beyond. This has renewed interest in the events leading up to the commencement of hostilities in August 1914. It has also spurred academic and policymaking circles around the world to examine how the lessons of a century ago could be applied to the study and conduct of contemporary international relations. Accordingly, the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) organized a two-day international conference in Belgrade on 30-31 May 2014 entitled "The European Tragedy of 1914 and the Multipolar World of 2014: Lessons Learned". Panel V The Crisis in Ukraine: Winds of the New Cold War?- Russia, the EU and U.S. are making moves in an increasingly tumultuous region of Eastern Europe in which each party seek to alter the balance of power in their favor. Understanding possible trajectories and how they can influence bilateral ties is assuming critical importance. Jeffrey Sachs is the Director of The Earth Institute, Quetelet Professor of Sustainable Development, and Professor of Health Policy and Management at Columbia University. He is Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Millennium Development Goals, and is the Director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. He is also co-founder and Chief Strategist of the Millennium Promise Alliance, and is the Director of the Millennium Villages Project. Dr. Sachs is one of the world's leading expert on economic development and the fight against poverty. For more than a quarter century he has advised dozens of statesmen on economic strategy in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Prof. Sachs is a member of CIRSD Board of Advisers.
